Windaus

Japanese: ウィンダウス
Windaus

German organic chemist. Born in Berlin. Studied medicine at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, but became interested in chemistry under the influence of EH Fischer at the university of Berlin. At Freiburg he studied cholesterol under H. Kiliani, receiving his doctorate in 1901. In 1913 he became professor of medical chemistry at the University of Innsbruck. In 1915 he succeeded O. Wallach as professor at the University of Göttingen (until 1944). He conducted structural research on cholesterol and steroids with his friend HO Wieland. He also proved that the precursor of vitamin D is dehydrocholesterol, discovered histamine, and contributed to elucidating the structure of vitamin B1 . These studies attracted the attention of industrial chemists. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1928 for his research into the relationship between steroids and their vitamins.
