C 14 H 10 O 4 (242.22). Abbreviated as BPO. Also known as benzoyl peroxide. It is obtained by reacting benzoyl chloride with hydrogen peroxide and alkali or sodium peroxide. Colorless crystals. Melting point: 103-104 °C. Explosive. Practically insoluble in water and ethanol, soluble in common organic solvents. In solution, it generates radicals such as C 6 H 5 COO・ and C 6 H 5 ・ by thermal decomposition, so it is used as an initiator for vinyl polymerization in the production of polystyrene and polyacrylonitrile. It is also used as a crosslinking hardener and wheat bleaching agent. C14H10O4(242.22).
