A city at the tip of the Zamboanga Peninsula in the western part of Mindanao, Philippines. It has a good harbor protected by Basilan Island offshore. In 1636, the Spanish built a fort there and used it as a base for suppressing Muslims. The port is the fourth largest trading port in the country and the center of commerce in the southern Philippines. Hardwoods such as mahogany, copra, Manila hemp, marine products, and fruit are exported. Seashells and processed products, brasswork, and bronzework are local specialties. The average annual temperature is 26.9°C, but the dry season from December to May is comfortable. The Spanish-style buildings lining the downtown area and the beautiful beaches have led to the city's development as a tourist destination. Population: 444,000 (1990 estimate).
