Lateral branches that form at the soil edge of grass crops. It is also used as a term to describe the phenomenon of the formation of lateral branches. In many grass crops, many leaves grow densely at the base of the main stem, and tiller buds equivalent to lateral buds form in each leaf axil. The tiller buds develop in correspondence with the development of the leaves on the main stem, and become tillers. This correspondence is known to be highly regular in rice and wheat, and the developed tillers have an appearance similar to that of the main stem, except for one anterior leaf with a unique shape at the base.
