In this furnace, metals are melted in a high vacuum of 10-4 to 10-5 mmHg using an electron beam emitted from an electron gun with an accelerating voltage of 14 to 35 kV, and then solidified in a water-cooled copper mold to produce ingots. The heating efficiency of the electron beam is 75 to 85%, and high temperatures can be obtained. Since high temperatures can be obtained in a short time as well as a high degree of vacuum, this furnace is suitable for melting and refining high-melting point active metals such as titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), and molybdenum (Mo). In addition, this furnace is excellent at removing impurity elements and gas components with high vapor pressures, and is also used to remelt and refine crude metals.
