An island in Gwynedd (formerly Anglesey) in northwest Wales, UK. In Roman times it was called Mona Island, but it was given the name "Angle Island" by the Saxons. It has an area of 712 km2 and a population of 68,000 (1991). The island is low and flat, with an elevation of less than 180 m, and is mainly used for raising beef cattle, sheep, and dairy cows, as well as for cultivating oats and barley. During the Roman invasion, it became a refuge for Celtic Druids, and in the Middle Ages it also opposed England as the center of indigenous power in Gwynedd, but was conquered in 1282.
