Publius Terentius Afer

A Roman comic playwright. A Libyan born in Carthage. He became a slave to the Terence family in Rome, but his master recognized his talent, educated him like a free man, and gave him his master's name after he was freed. He was eventually accepted into the circle of Greek culture lovers centered around Scipio the Younger (the Scipio Circle), and with their backing he made his debut as a comic playwright and achieved success. He traveled to Greece to study in 159 BC, and died there.

His first work, The Andrian Woman, premiered in 166 BC. According to one theory, he read it before the old master Caecilius before the premiere, which earned him acceptance into the Scipio Circle. His second work, The Stepmother, premiered in 165 BC, but was a failure, as it overlapped with an acrobat's performance and the audience was so small that the performance had to be stopped midway (though the third performance in 160 BC was a success). He then produced The Masochist in 163 BC, The Eunuch and Pormio in 161 BC, and his masterpiece The Brothers in 160 BC. These works, like those of Plautus, are adaptations of Greek New Comedy, but they differ in many ways from Plautus's works. These differences include the fact that the introduction is not a rough outline but a rebuttal to the criticisms of the critics (particularly that they had ruined the original work by "patching together"), the plot is more coherent, and Greek geography and customs are relatively well preserved. However, the biggest difference is that while Plautus was not afraid to become vulgar at times and pursued explosive laughter, Terence was a refined, contemplative, and humanitarian observer of humanity. Karl Marx's lifelong creed, "I am a man. Wherever man is concerned, I am no stranger" (self-masochist), conveys this aspect well.

古代ローマの喜劇作家。カルタゴ生まれのリビア人。ローマでテレンティウス家の奴隷となるが、主人に才能を認められ、自由人と同じように教育を受け、解放されて主人の名前を与えられた。やがて小スキピオを中心とするギリシア文化愛好家のサークル（スキピオ・サークル）に受け入れられ、その後ろ盾により喜劇作家としてデビューし、成功を収めた。紀元前159年ギリシアに遊学し、その地で没した。

　処女作は『アンドロスの女』で、前166年に初演された。一説によれば、初演に先だって老大家カエキリウスの前で朗読して認められ、スキピオ・サークルに受け入れられるきっかけとなった。第二作『義母』の初演（前165）は、軽業(かるわざ)師の興行と重なって観客が集まらず、途中で上演を中止するほどの失敗であった（前160年の第3回上演では成功）。続いて前163年に『自虐者』、前161年に『宦官(かんがん)』『ポルミオ』、前160年には傑作『兄弟』を発表。これらの作品は、プラウトゥスの場合と同様、ギリシア新喜劇の翻案だが、プラウトゥスの作品と多くの点で異なっている。それは、前口上が粗筋の紹介ではなく、批評家の非難（とくに、「継ぎはぎ」によって原作をだいなしにしたという）への反論であること、筋がより一貫性のあるものとなっていること、ギリシアの地理や習慣が比較的よく守られていること、などである。しかし、もっとも大きな相違は、プラウトゥスがときには野卑になることも恐れず、爆発的な笑いを追求したのに対し、テレンティウスは洗練された、瞑想(めいそう)的、人道主義的な人間観察者であったことである。カール・マルクスが終世の信条としたといわれる「私は人間である。人間に関することなら、みんな他人(ひと)ごととは思わない」（自虐者）ということばは、この側面をよく伝えている。
