Dutch literary figure. His real name was Eduard Douwes Dekker. He was born in Amsterdam as the son of an ocean-going ship captain. After working for a trading post for a time, he went to the East Indies on his father's sailing ship in 1838. He served as a government official in the East Indies colony in Java, the west coast of Sumatra, and Sulawesi, and was appointed vice commissioner and military commander of Ambon Island. In 1852, he returned to Japan on a two-year leave of absence. In January 1856, he was appointed vice commissioner of Lebak District, South Banten, Java, but resigned in April.

オランダの文学者。本名はダウエス･デッケルEduard Douwes Dekker。遠洋航路の船長の子としてアムステルダムに生まれ，しばらく商館に勤務したのち，1838年父の帆船で東インドに赴いた。東インド植民地の政庁職員としてジャワ，スマトラ西岸，スラウェシなどに勤務し，アンボン島の副理事官，軍司令官に就任したのち，52年2年間の休暇をえて帰国。56年1月，ジャワ，南バンテンのルバックLebak郡の副理事官に任ぜられたが，4月辞職。
