1820‐87 Dutch literary figure. His real name was Eduard Douwes Dekker. He was born in Amsterdam as the son of an ocean-going ship captain. After working for a trading post for a time, he went to the East Indies on his father's sailing ship in 1838. He served as a government official in the East Indies colony in Java, the west coast of Sumatra, and Sulawesi, and was appointed vice commissioner and military commander of Ambon Island. In 1852, he returned to Japan on a two-year leave of absence. In January 1856, he was appointed vice commissioner of Lebak District, South Banten, Java, but resigned in April.
