De re metallica

This is a book on mining and metallurgy written by G. Agricola, a German mining engineer and physician who is also known as the "father of mining science." De re metallica means "On Metals," and the original work was written in Latin and consists of 12 volumes. He studied mining science, petrology, and metallurgy while working as a physician in the mining town of Joachimsthal and wrote it. The highlight of the book is the 292 woodblock prints, which were provided with the cooperation of artist B. Wefring, and vividly depict the working conditions of mining technology at the time.

ドイツの鉱山技術者･医者で，〈鉱山学の父〉とも呼ばれるG.アグリコラが著した採鉱･冶金技術書。デ･レ･メタリカとは〈金属について〉という意味で，原書はラテン語で書かれ，全12巻から成る。彼がヨアヒムスタールという鉱山町で医者をするかたわら鉱山学，岩石学，冶金学を研究して書き著したもの。圧巻は画家ウェフリングB.Wefringが協力して添えた292枚にわたる木版画で，当時の鉱山技術の作業状況を克明に描き出している。
