The release of a wish made to the gods and Buddhas. It can be performed at funerals or when a person has recovered from an illness. If the deceased made a wish while alive, various spells are performed when the deceased is carried out of the coffin so that they can attain Buddhahood without any regrets in this world. This is called a wish-return, and involves removing the corners of a fan and throwing it onto the roof, shaking the kimono worn while the deceased was alive upside down, breaking rice bowls, or scattering rice or beans. All of these spells are intended to remove the spirits of the dead or to isolate them from this world so that they cannot return. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
