Derbent (English spelling)
Dagestan is a city in the Republic of Dagestan, in the North Caucasus, in southwestern Russia. It is located about 120 km southeast of the capital of the republic, Makhachkala, and faces the Caspian Sea. As it is a strategic location with the Great Caucasus Mountains looming behind it, a fortress was built there by the Persians as early as the 5th century. It was occupied by Arabs in the 8th century, Mongols in the 13th century, and others, and became part of Russia in the early 19th century. The ruins of the 6th century city wall, an 8th century mosque, and a medieval caravanserai (caravanserai) are preserved, and the ruins of these ancient cities, including the fortress, were registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 2003. Industries include wool, food (fish processing, canned fruit, wine), etc. A main railway and highway connect Makhachkala to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Population 119,961 (2010).
