Oghuz (English spelling)

Japanese: オグズ（英語表記）Oghuz

The name of an ancient Turkic nomadic people in North and Central Asia. In Arab historical sources, it is called Ghuzz. In ancient times, it was part of the broader term "Turk", but after the Turk period, it became the term "Turk" in the narrower sense. Their range of activity was wide, from the Altai Mountains to as far west as the Caspian Sea. It is particularly important as the name of Turkic groups in Central Asia, and is used synonymously with Turkmen. It is considered to be the ancestor of the Islamized Turks, and both the Seljuk and Ottoman dynasties have legends about Oghuz Khan.

北アジア，中央アジアの古トルコ系遊牧民族の名称。アラブ史料ではグズGhuzz。古くは広義の鉄勒（てつろく）(テュルク)の一部分を構成し，突厥（とつくつ）時代以後，狭義の鉄勒の名称となった。その活動範囲は広く，アルタイ山脈周辺から，西方はカスピ海以西に及ぶ。中央アジアのトルコ系諸集団の名称として特に重要であり，トルクメンとも同義に使われる。イスラム化したトルコ族の始祖と考えられ，セルジューク朝もオスマン朝も共にオグズ･ハーン伝説をもつ。
