Nikko

Japanese:
Nikko

A Nichiren sect monk from the late Kamakura period. He was known as Hokibo and Byakuren Ajari. He was from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture). He was originally a Tendai sect monk who studied at Shijukuin Temple in Kambara, Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture), but converted to Nichiren's teachings and took the name Nikko. He followed Nichiren and later carried out missionary activities in Suruga Province as well as Izu and Kai (Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures), greatly expanding the influence of the sect. When Nichiren passed away in 1282 (Kōan 5), he was chosen as Nichiren's main disciple, and is revered by posterity as one of the Six Elder Monks. After that, he played a central role in protecting Nichiren's tombstone built on Mt. Minobu, but due to disagreements with the feudal lord Hakii Sanenaga (1222-1297), Nikko finally left Minobu in 1288 (Shoo 1) and founded Taiseki-ji Temple in Oishigahara at the foot of Mt. Fuji. With the support of the feudal lord Nanjo Tokimitsu (1259-1332) and the local lord Ishikawa Magosaburo, he opened Honmon-ji Temple in Omosushi and worked to develop his sect. Later, the Nikko school (Fuji school) was formed with his disciples at the center. The current Nichiren Shoshu sect belongs to this school.
