Travelogue of Tokan

Japanese:
Travelogue of Tokan

A travelogue from the mid-Kamakura period. One volume. Author unknown. He left Kyoto around August 10, 1242 (Ninji 3), and arrived in Kamakura about 10 days later. He stayed there for about two months, and wrote about his journey until he returned home around October 23. Most of the book is about his journey from Kyoto to Kamakura, and the part about his stay in Kamakura is very short considering his stay of only 60 days. The writing is a mixture of Japanese and Chinese, with many Chinese words used, but it is well-crafted and fluent in both Japanese and Chinese. There are also parts of the writing that are similar to the writings in "Genpei Seisuiki" and "Nagatobon Heike Monogatari". Compared to "Kaidoki," which describes the Tokaido and Kamakura in the same Kamakura period, it is less self-illuminating, and has less literary value as a travelogue.
