A city in the middle reaches of the Muko River in the southeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city area on either side of the river has been a hot spring resort since the Nara period, and in 1910 the Minoo-Arima Electric Tramway (now the Hankyu Takarazuka Line) was opened, creating a new hot spring and an amusement park, and it developed after becoming the home base of the Takarazuka Revue Company. The hot springs are saline and radioactive, with temperatures ranging from 16 to 30 degrees Celsius. Potted plants, seedlings, bulbs such as dahlias and irises are cultivated, and tourism agriculture such as strawberries and potatoes is also thriving. Industrial complexes are being constructed, and housing development from the Taisho period continues to this day, with large-scale housing development underway. There is Kiyoshikojin, a shrine for warding off misfortune and bringing good fortune, and Nakayama-dera, the 24th temple of the Thirty-Three Temples of the Western Provinces. The Hankyu Imazu Line, Fukuchiyama Line, and Chugoku Expressway also pass through the city. The January 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture earthquake caused great damage, with 116 deaths and 5,059 houses collapsing or burning down. Area: 101.80 km2 . Population: 225,700 (2010).
