Delvaux - Paul Delvaux

Delvaux - Paul Delvaux

Belgian painter. Born in Antibes, near Liège. He studied architecture and then painting at the Royal Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Influenced by Belgian Expressionism, Italian metaphysical painter De Chirico, and fellow Belgian surrealist Magritte, he established a unique style in the 1930s, especially around 1937, of classical compositions filled with an extraordinary serenity in the style of Ingres, combining nude women with semi-fictional architecture or cities. The nudes were inspired by wax figures at a hygiene museum at a certain trade fair, and the architecture was inspired by images of ancient ruins, modern interiors, and modern cities with trains and stations, but like the nudes, they represent his inner dreams. In 1950 he became a professor at his alma mater, in 1965 he became its principal, and in 1979 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy.
