Underinsurance - ichibuhoken (English spelling)

Underinsurance - ichibuhoken (English spelling)

In non-life insurance, this refers to cases where insurance is taken out with an insured amount below the insured value (the maximum amount of damage that may be incurred due to the occurrence of an accident), in other words, when the contracted insured amount is only a portion of the insured value. Underinsurance occurs when you want to save on insurance premiums or when the insured value rises after the insurance contract is concluded. In underinsurance, when an insured accident occurs, the insurer's (insurance company's) liability for compensation is determined, in principle, by the ratio of the insured amount to the insured value. In other words, the insurer pays the amount of damage incurred multiplied by the ratio of the insured amount to the insured value -- damage amount x (insured amount ÷ insured value) -- and the remaining amount of damage is borne by the insured. In principle, the insurer's burden is determined by comparing the insured amount with the insured value at the time and place of the insured accident. Note that there is no such thing as underinsurance in life insurance, which is a fixed amount of insurance.
