German military officer. He studied at the Military Academy and the Army University. He joined the German Army in 1892 and became the commander of the Berlin Army in the early 1930s, but was expelled from the Army because of his outspoken comments about Hitler. He was recalled in 1939, and as the most senior officer in the German Army, he commanded Army Group South in the campaign against Poland, Army Group A in the campaign against France, and Army Group South in the campaign against Russia. At the end of 1941, he clashed with Hitler during an operation near Rostov, northeast of Moscow, and was dismissed, but in 1942 he was again appointed commander in chief of the Western Army in France. In July 1944, after the successful Allied landings at Normandy, he proposed peace and was dismissed. In September of the same year, he was again made commander in chief of the Western Army to lead the invasion of the Ardennes, and in May 1945 he was captured by the U.S. Army in Munich. The war crimes case against him was dropped for health reasons, but he served in a British prison from 1946 to 1948. Because of his career, he is called the "invincible old man."

ドイツの軍人。陸軍士官学校，陸軍大学に学んだ。1892年ドイツ陸軍に入り，1930年代初期にベルリン陸軍司令官になるが，ヒトラーについての遠慮のない物言いのため陸軍を追われた。しかし1939年には呼び戻され，ドイツ陸軍の最長老として，対ポーランド作戦では南方軍集団，対フランス作戦ではA軍集団，対ロシア作戦では南方軍集団を指揮した。1941年末，モスクワ北東のロストフ付近の作戦でヒトラーと意見が衝突，解任されるが，1942年再びフランスで西方軍総司令官に任命された。連合軍のノルマンディー上陸作戦成功後の1944年７月，和平を具申して解任された。しかし同年９月，アルデンヌ侵攻指揮のため再度西方軍総司令官となり，1945年５月ミュンヘンでアメリカ軍に捕らえられた。彼に対する戦犯訴訟は健康上の理由で破棄されたが，1946年−1948年英国の獄中にあった。その経歴から〈不倒翁〉と称されている。
