Year of death: April 15, 1910 (Meiji 43) Year of birth: September 13, 1879 (Meiji 12) A naval officer in the Meiji period. The third son of Sakuma Yoshimori, a priest at Maekawa Shrine in Mikata-cho, Fukui Prefecture. Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1901. After the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), he decided to study submarines, and after graduating from the Torpedo Training School, he was appointed captain of the 1st Submarine Squadron in 1906. He was later transferred to captain of the 6th Submarine Squadron, and on April 15, 1908, while leaving his mother ship, the Rekisan Maru, off the coast of Shinko in Yamaguchi Prefecture for diving training, the engine ventilator malfunctioned, causing the ship to flood and sink, killing him along with 10 of his subordinates.
