Old red sandstone

Japanese: 旧赤色砂岩 - きゅうせきしょくさがん（英語表記）old red sandstone

Red sandstone formed in the Devonian period. It corresponds to the New Red Sandstone of the Permian period. It typically develops around the Caledonian mountain range (Spitsbergen - northern Scandinavia - Great Britain), which was formed by orogeny from the end of the Silurian period to the Devonian period, and in some places it can reach a thickness of 11,000 m. Similar deposits are also found in the western part of the former Soviet Union and Central Asia. It consists of coarse-grained sandstone, conglomerate, shale, etc. It is zoned by abundant fish fossils. Fossils of sea scorpions, shellfish, amphibians, land plants, etc. are also found, and it is thought that the climate at that time was tropical and dry.

デボン紀に形成された赤色砂岩。ペルム紀の新赤色砂岩に対応する。シルル紀末からデボン紀にかけて起った造山運動により形成されたカレドニア山系 (スピッツベルゲン～スカンジナビア北部～イギリス) の周辺に典型的に発達し，厚さ1万 1000mに達するところがある。同様の堆積物は旧ソ連西部，中央アジアにもみられる。粗粒の砂岩，礫岩，頁岩などから成る。豊富な魚類化石により分帯されている。ウミサソリ類，貝類，両生類，陸生植物などの化石も産し，当時は熱帯性の乾燥気候であったと考えられる。
