Yoriharu Water - Raishunsui

A Confucian scholar of the late Edo period. Born in Aki (Hiroshima Prefecture). His given name was Tadahiro, his pen name was Senshu, he was commonly known as Yataro, and his pen name was Shunsui. He was the older brother of Sanyo's father, Kyohei. He went to Osaka to study under Katayama Hokkai (1723-1790), and joined the Kontonsha (Poetry Society) presided over by Hokkai, where he distinguished himself and opened a private school, but later became a Confucian scholar in the Hiroshima domain. A strict Neo-Confucian scholar, he unified the domain's education into Neo-Confucianism, and was a pioneer in the Kansei era ban on heretical learning (1790), and also became a lecturer at the Shōheiko Academy. While serving in Edo, he became acquainted with Matsudaira Sadanobu. His works include Shunsui Iko (1828).

江戸後期の儒者。安芸(あき)（広島県）の人。名は惟寛(ただひろ)、字(あざな)は千秋(せんしゅう)、通称は弥太郎、号を春水という。山陽の父、杏坪(きょうへい)の兄にあたる。大坂に出て片山北海（1723―1790）に学び、北海の主宰した混沌(こんとん)社（詩社）に加わって頭角を現し、家塾を開いたが、のち広島藩の儒官となった。厳格な朱子学者で、藩学を朱子学に統一して寛政(かんせい)異学の禁（1790）の先駆けとなり、昌平黌(しょうへいこう)の講師にもなった。江戸出仕中、松平定信(まつだいらさだのぶ)の知遇を得た。著書に『春水遺稿』（1828）などがある。
