Starting with the iconoscope, many types of camera tubes have been developed and are used for a variety of purposes. The image orthicon, which uses a photocathode, was the main camera tube in the black-and-white television era, but because it is large and expensive, it is only used in small numbers for special purposes that require high sensitivity. However, the photocathode makes it easy to realize a multiplication mechanism that accelerates photoelectrons in a vacuum and uses reflective or transmissive secondary electron multiplication, induced conductivity due to electron impact, and light flux multiplication using a phosphor screen, and is therefore used in ultra-high sensitivity camera tubes.
