Human science

It is said that it was originally a translation of the French term science de l'homme, but now it is used as a Japanese word without being bound by its European origin. Its meaning also varies depending on the person and the situation. For example, when a university creates a humanities department that is slightly different from the traditional literature department, it may be named the "Faculty of Human Sciences". In such a department, philosophers may also participate as people in charge of "philosophical anthropology". On the other hand, there are people who imagine human science as a combination of the human-related parts of biology and ecology with robotics and ergonomics. In journalism, it has also been popular to call those that are quite close to literature, with psychoanalysis, cultural anthropology, ethnology, and linguistics at their core, "human science". If we trace it back to Greek, it would be a word with the same origin as anthropology.

もともとフランス語のscience de l'hommeの訳語であったといわれるが、いまではヨーロッパ語での語源にこだわらない、日本語の単語として流通している。そうしてその意味も、使う人、場合によってさまざまである。たとえば大学で、伝統的な文学部とは少し肌合いの違う人文系の学部をつくるときに、これに「人間科学部」の名前を与えている場合がある。こういう学部には、哲学者も「哲学的人間学」の担当者ということで参加していることがある。これに対し、生物学、生態学のなかの人間に関する部分と、ロボット工学、人間工学とを組み合わせたようなものを中心として人間科学のイメージを描いている人もいる。また、精神分析学や文化人類学、民族学、言語学などを核としたうえで、文学にもかなり接近したものを「人間科学」とよぶ言い方がジャーナリズムではやったこともある。ギリシア語までさかのぼれば、人類学と同じ語源のことばということになろう。
