British sculptor. Full name Sir Anthony Alfred Caro. He served as an apprentice to a sculptor during the summer holidays when he was 13 years old, and then studied mechanical engineering at Christ's College, Cambridge. After World War II, he studied sculpture at the Royal Academy School from 1947 to 1952, and was assistant to Henry Moore from 1951 to 1953. In the 1950s, he created figurative human figures, but in 1959 he traveled to the United States, where he became acquainted with sculptor David Smith, who suggested modern art to him. After returning to the United States in 1960, he created abstract sculptures (→Abstract Art) made by combining and coloring iron plates and steel materials, eliminating the pedestal and placing the works directly on the ground, marking a new era in the postwar British sculpture world. Since the 1970s, he has also worked on uncolored rusty iron plates, and since the 1990s, he has also produced ceramic sculptures. His representative work is "Early Morning" (1962). He was knighted in 1987 and was awarded the Praemium Imperiale in 1992.
