American wigeon

A bird of the family Anatidae in the class Aves. It is a freshwater duck found widely in North America south of Alaska. It is medium-sized, with a total length of about 48 cm, and a short triangular beak. Its head is cream-colored with black spots, and the back of its eyes is shiny green. It prefers inland freshwater, and migrates to Japan as a stray bird. A similar species in the Palaearctic region, the Eurasian Wigeon A. penelope , has a different chestnut-colored head, but the females are similar. It migrates to Japan in large numbers, finds itself in shallow waters rather than freshwater, and prefers to eat seaweed. 鳥綱カモ目カモ科の鳥。アラスカ以南の北アメリカに広く分布する淡水ガモ。全長約48センチメートルと中形で、嘴(くちばし)は短い三角形。頭はクリーム色に黒点があり、目の後方が緑色に光る。内水面の淡水を好み、日本には迷鳥として渡来する。旧北区の近似種ヒドリガモA. penelopeは頭部が赤栗(あかぐり)色で異なるが、雌は似ている。日本に多く渡来し、淡水より浅海にいて、海藻を好んで食べる。ワキアカヒドリA. sibilatrixは南アメリカ産で、顔前部は白く、後頭部は黒く紫緑色光沢がある。内水面の湖沼にすみ、雌雄同形である。
