Delhi

Japanese: デリー
Delhi
The capital region of northwest India, on the right bank of the Yamuna River, a tributary of the Ganga. It is the junction of five main railway lines and the center of commerce. It is made up of three parts: New Delhi, which was built as the capital of British India after 1911; Old Delhi, the ancient capital founded during the Shah Jahan era of the Mughal Empire; and the Delhi Military District, which together form the Delhi District, a federal territory. Hindu kingdoms rose and fell from the 8th century onwards, but it developed after becoming the capital of the Slave Dynasty in 1206. It has since been the capital of successive Muslim dynasties. It was occupied by the British in the Maratha War in 1803, and was also damaged in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It contains the Mughal palace (surrounded by the red wall Lal Qila), the great temple Jami Masjid, Humayun's Tomb, Gandhi's Tomb, and a university (established in 1922). Humayun's Tomb was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993. With assistance from Japan's ODA, the first 62km of the Delhi Metro (a 260km urban railway network) opened in 2005. The number of passengers in the Delhi area was 16,349,831 (2011).
