Maurice Duverger

Maurice Duverger

French political scientist. Professor at the University of Paris I and director of the Institute of Political Science, he also wrote prolifically on current political events as an editor of Le Monde from a non-Communist leftist perspective. His first book, Les Constitutions de la France (1943), was banned by the Vichy regime. He established his international reputation as a political scientist with Les Partis politiques (1951), which has already achieved classic status as a sociological study of party systems and party structures. His subsequent major works include La Démocratie sans le peuple (1967), Janus: Les deux faces de l'Occident (1972), La Monarchie républicaine (1974), and La République des citoyens (1982). From 1989 to 1994, he served as an Italian Member of the European Parliament, nominated by the then Italian Communist Party.
