A sailor of the Dutch East India Company. His Chinese name was Hamel. In 1653, he was caught in a storm on the ship De Sperweer en route from Taiwan to Nagasaki, and was washed ashore on Jeju Island with 38 other people. He was escorted to Seoul the following year, and was imprisoned in Yeosu, Kangjin, and other places, but in 1666 he escaped with seven other companions and returned to Japan. He later wrote an account of his experiences of imprisonment, "The Shipwreck of the Dutch Ship on Jeju Island," with an appendix, "The Chronicle of Korea," which became known as "Hamel's Voyage," and was the first document to introduce the geography, customs, and politics of Korea to Europe in earnest.

オランダ東インド会社所属の船員。漢名，哈梅児。1653年，デ･スペルウェール号で台湾から長崎に向かう途中，暴風雨にあい一行38名とともに済州島に漂着。翌年ソウルに護送され，さらに麗水，康津などに監禁されたが，1666年，7名の仲間と脱出，日本を経て帰国した。のち抑留の体験記《蘭船済州島難破記》と付録《朝鮮国記》を著述したが，これは《ハメルの漂流記》として知られ，朝鮮の地理，風俗，政治などを本格的にヨーロッパに紹介した最初の文献となった。
