A perennial herb of the family Malvaceae, which grows on the ground or on rocks under shady forests. It was named after the place where it was found in Hetsuka, Osumi Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture, and hence its Japanese name. It is evergreen. The rhizome is short and creeping, dorsoventrally oriented, and the leaves emerge only from the upper side. The scales at the base of the rhizome and petiole are opaque black-brown. The leaves are slightly adjacent and form two types. The vegetative leaves have slightly short stalks, are 40-80 cm long, and are simply pinnate. The pinnae are oblong-lanceolate, have shallow wavy margins, the terminal pinnae are long and bud, and have reticulate veins. The sporophylls are taller than the vegetative leaves, have long petioles, and have short and narrow pinnae. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
