Cho Oyu (mountain) (English spelling)

Japanese: チョー･オユー[山]（英語表記）Cho Oyu

A mountain located on the Nepal-Tibet border, deep in the Ngozhumba Glacier in the Khumbu (Everest) mountain range in the Nepal Himalayas. It is 8,153m above sea level. In 1983, Nepal announced that it was 8,201m above sea level. In Tibetan, the name means "Turkish Jade God." After an attack by a British team in 1952, an Austrian team (Captain H. Tighe) was the first to reach the summit in 1954. An Indian team reached the summit in 1958, a West German team in 1964, and a joint West German-Austrian team in 1978. Many people have been lost, including the International Women's Team (Captain C. Kogan) who attempted in 1959.
