Gallicanism

Translated as "Gallicism" or "Gallicanism." A term referring to the theological and political stance of the Catholic Church in France (formerly called Gaul), which sought independence from the Pope. A tendency that coincided with the expansion of French sovereignty and centralization, it advocated that the king should be exempt from the Pope's approval in secular matters and that the Council should be superior to the papacy. It reached its peak under the reign of Louis XIV, and Bossuet was a representative proponent. It declined after the July Revolution of 1830.
