…After Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Edo Shogunate appointed him as the local governor of Nagasaki, which was under its direct control. He was one of the Edo Shogunate's distant province magistrates and belonged to the Roju. The first was Terazawa Hirotaka, the lord of Karatsu Castle in Hizen, who was appointed by Hideyoshi in 1592 (Bunroku 1). From the start of the Edo period until the country was isolated, the magistrates were close to Tokugawa Ieyasu, represented by Hasegawa Fujihiro, the brother of Tokugawa Ieyasu's concubine Onatsu, his nephew Gonroku, and Takenaka Shigeyoshi, the lord of Bungo Funai Domain. They exerted their power in the Shogunate's control of trade and the ban on Christianity, and exercised their authority over the relevant domains in procuring supplies and handling foreign-related cases, and were also trading managers themselves. …
