1873‐1961 American inventor. Also known as De Forest. Best known for inventing the triode vacuum tube. Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Studied at Yale University, where he earned his doctorate by studying the reflection of Hertzian waves at the ends of parallel wires. Worked for Western Electric, and in 1902 set up his own company, the De Forest Wireless Telegraph Company, but was unsuccessful.
