A city in the Asturias region in northern Spain. Population 201,154 (2001). Located at an altitude of 220 meters in the Naron River basin at the northern foot of the Cantabric Mountains. Blessed with underground resources such as coalfields and iron mines, it is a large industrial city centered on the chemical industry such as steel, ammunition, and coal. Products are shipped from the outer port of Gijon, 20 kilometers north. It was the base of the 7-century resistance movement against the Moors, known as the Reconquista. From 810 to 100 years later, it was the capital of the Principality of Asturias. There are many historical sites, including a large Gothic cathedral. These were burned and destroyed during the miners' uprising and establishment of the commune in 1934, and during the long siege (1936-37) during the Spanish Civil War, but were later restored.
