...A serial action film starring the mysterious thief Fantômas, produced from 1913 to 1914. Directed by Louis Feuillade and based on a newspaper serial novel by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain. It is made up of five parts: "Fantômas, Part 1: The Bertham Affair", "Fantômas, Part 2: The Man in Black", "Fantômas, Part 3: The Mysterious Fingerprint", "Fantômas, Part 4: The Tragedy of the Masked Ball", and "Fantômas, Part 5: The False Director". The first part is made up of 30 scenes in 3 stories, and the second part is made up of 46 scenes in 4 stories. The series' "most amazing adventures, the most unexpected accidents, the most terrible crimes, the most complicated conflicts, and the great breath of freedom and poetry" excited the French surrealists of the time, and the poet Robert Desnos wrote the following poem in praise of Fantomas:
