Born in 1621. He served Matsudaira Sadatsuna, lord of Kuwana Domain in Ise (Mie Prefecture), as a domain Confucian scholar. After Sadatsuna's death, he spent his time writing kana zoshi and lecturing on Chinese classics. He later served Ishikawa Noriyuki, lord of Yodo Domain in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture), until resigning in 1621. He was born in Kyoto. His real surname was Nagaoka, and his given name was Sho.
