The idea of a god-king, originating from India, explained the mystical aspects of kingship in the first half of the Angkor period in Cambodia (9th to 12th centuries). In Sanskrit it means "king of the gods," and in Cambodian inscriptions it is interpreted as "god-king." It is a Cambodian idea of the king as an incarnation of God on earth. It is said that a special linga (a phallus symbolizing the god Shiva) or a god statue that united the god and the king was placed in a high tower of a large temple in the center of the capital, assisted by a Brahmin priest, and worshiped there.

カンボジアのアンコール朝時代前半(9～12世紀)における王権の神秘的な側面を説明したインド起源の神王思想。サンスクリットで〈諸神の王〉の意味で，カンボジアの碑刻文では〈神即王〉と解釈する。地上における神の化身としての王に対するカンボジア的な考え方である。都城の中央にある大寺院の高塔内において，バラモン祭司の介添えにより神と王が合致した特別なリンガ(シバ神の象徴たる男根)または神像を安置し，礼拝していたという。
