A coup d'état to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate planned by Emperor Go-Daigo in 1331. After failing in the Shochu Incident (1324), the Emperor plotted to overthrow the Shogunate again. The Rokuhara Tandai discovered this plan in advance, and participants Hino Toshiki and the monk Enkan were captured. The Emperor fled to Kasagiyama in August of the same year, but was transferred to Rokuhara the following year and exiled to Oki. On April 27 of that year, the Shogunate changed the era name to Shokei and supported Emperor Kogon. Kusunoki Masashige and his men responded to Emperor Go-Daigo's uprising and fought the Shogunate forces at Akasaka Castle, and when it fell, they barricaded themselves in Chihaya Castle, harassing the Shogunate's large army. In the third year of the Genkō era (33), Emperor Go-Daigo escaped from Oki, and Ashikaga Takauji, Nitta Yoshisada and others rose up in arms, which led to the downfall of the Kamakura shogunate.
