A plateau in central Mexico. Anahuac means "wet place" in the original language, and originally referred to the water-rich area centered on Lake Texcoco in the central Mexican plateau, i.e. the Basin of Mexico. Mexico is water-poor, but the meltwater from 5,000-meter-class mountains such as Mt. Popocatepetl has made it a water-rich region. The Anahuac Plateau refers to this water-rich area, but some people do not understand the meaning of Anahuac and refer to the dry area of the central Mexican plateau, which is rich in cacti, as the Anahuac Plateau. The underground water of Mt. Popocatepetl is used for pools in Cuauhtla and Matamoros in the southeast, and in Puebla it is used as agricultural water through dams. Lake Xochimilco in the south of Mexico City is also a remnant of Lake Texcoco, and with the construction of Mexico City, a drainage channel was built in the north to reduce Lake Texcoco. It has now shrunk to the northeast, and the southern part is used for an airport. [Takagi Hideki] An active volcano (5,452m above sea level) towering between Mexico City and Puebla. The meltwater creates a rich water area in the Anahuac Plateau, and the underground water is an important water source for the surrounding cities.
