...Its history is also characterized by its dramatic ups and downs, with several periods of prosperity that could be called golden ages, but with periods of stagnation that were almost blank in between. The golden ages are, first, the period of transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, led by J. Dunstable (c. 1390-1453), second, the Tudor period, which saw remarkable developments in both vocal and instrumental music under T. Tallis (c. 1505-85), W. Bird, J. Dowland, O. Gibbons, and the subsequent reign of James I, third, the Restoration period led by Purcell, and fourth, the modern period from Vaughan Williams to Britten. Another exceptional case is Handel's success in the first half of the 18th century.

From [Renaissance Music]

…In Spain, Cristóbal de Morales (c. 1500-53) and Victoria established a distinctive national style, and vihuela music became popular in instrumental music. England followed other European countries in developing its own Renaissance style, resulting in anthems and motets by Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-85), W. Bird, and O. Gibbons, madrigals by Thomas Morley (c. 1557-1602), Thomas Weelkes (c. 1575-1623), and John Wilbye (1574-1638), and virginal pieces by Bird, John Bull (c. 1562-1628), and Giles Farnaby (c. 1563-1640), and lute pieces by John Dowland and others.
