A city in southwest Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati, USA. Settlement began after peace was made with the Shawnee Indians in 1795, and the town was incorporated in 1805. The opening of the Miami-Erie Canal, which connected Cincinnati and Dayton in 1828, led to rapid growth, and the city was incorporated in 1841. In 1903, the Wright Brothers established the Wright Air Company, making the town the birthplace of aviation. Stimulated by a major flood in 1913, a large-scale flood control project was carried out, which was completed in 1922. The Dayton Plan became a model for flood control projects. The National Aeronautical Laboratory was established during World War II, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was built after the war, so many aviation-related research institutes are concentrated in the city. Factories for automobile parts, refrigerators, computers, printing, etc. are located in the city. Within and around the city are the University of Dayton (founded in 1850), Wright State University (1967), Dayton School of Art, Air Force Technical School, and the Aviation Museum. Population: 141,527 (2010). Dayton |
