…Born in Palermo, Sicily, he studied medicine at the University of Palermo in Sicily from 1841, and later studied chemistry at the universities of Naples and Pisa. In 1845, he became assistant to Rafaelle Piria (1815-65), an organic chemist and student of JBA Dumas at the University of Pisa. In 1848, he joined the rebel army for the Sicilian independence movement, but the following year, the revolt failed and he fled to Paris, where he engaged in organic chemistry research under ME Chevreul. …
