Qawām al‐Salṭaneh

1847‐1960
Iranian politician. He played an active role as a pro-American politician in Iran immediately after World War II. He entered the Iranian political scene immediately after World War I, and was the prime minister when he crushed the local rebellion in Khorasan in 1921 and wiped out the Gilan revolutionary regime. He was appointed prime minister again in the 1940s (1942-43, 1946-47), and during World War II he invited American military advisors to Iran to train the army and police, and appointed an American Secretary of the Treasury. During the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1945-46, he skillfully evaded Soviet diplomatic pressure as Iran's representative.

イランの政治家。第2次世界大戦直後のイランで親米政治家として活躍した。第1次大戦直後からイラン政界に登場し，1921年ホラーサーンの地方反乱を壊滅させ，同じくギーラーン革命政権を一掃したときの首相。40年代にも首相に任じられ(1942‐43,46‐47)，第2次大戦中，アメリカ軍事顧問をイランに招き，軍･警察を訓練させ，またアメリカ人財務長官を任命した。45‐46年の米ソ冷戦下，イランの代表としてソ連外交の圧力を巧みにかわした。
