CNRS

CNRS is France's "National Center for Scientific Research." Founded on October 19, 1939, it is the largest public research institute in France. It covers a wide range of academic fields, not limited to a specific field, and has a staff of about 33,000 (including about 11,200 researchers, about 13,750 full-time engineers and staff, and the remaining 8,000 postdoctoral researchers and others) , a budget of 3.4 billion euros, and more than 1,100 research units (as of 2013) . The relative size of CNRS can be understood when compared to the number of university faculty of about 75,000. In other words, the existence of widely recognized research institutes outside universities is a characteristic of the research system in France. In addition, the system of mixed research units (France) introduced in 1966 (about 95% of the above 1,100 in 2013) has made it possible to conduct research collaboration with universities and other institutions more closely. For universities, being selected as a mixed research unit is important because it indicates the high quality of the laboratory. CNRS also places great emphasis on the development of interdisciplinary research.
