Osamu Tezuka
Manga artist. Honna Osamu. Born in Toyonaka, Osaka. Moved to Takarazuka, Hyogo at the age of five, where he became passionate about manga and insect collecting. Debuted with the four-panel manga "Maachan's Diary" in 1946. In 1947, his book "New Treasure Island" (originally written by Sakai Shichima) became a bestseller. He created innovative story manga incorporating cinematic techniques with works such as "Lost World," and became a popular author with works such as "Jungle Emperor." Graduated from the medical school attached to Osaka University in 1951. Moved to Tokyo in 1952, and serialized works such as "Astro Boy" and "Ribbon no Kishi." Founded Mushi Productions in 1962, and released Japan's first animated television film, "Astro Boy." In 1967, he launched the manga magazine "COM," which gave a platform for young manga artists to publish their works, in addition to serializing his life's work "Phoenix" (1954-). He continued to work on such works as Buddha, Black Jack, The Three-Eyed One, and Message to Adolf, and passed away while serializing Neo Faust and other works. His depictions of the conflict between good and evil, and humanism and nihilism, continued to open up new possibilities for modern manga. In addition to the Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu, there is the Tezuka Osamu Memorial Museum in Takarazuka City.

漫画家。本名治。大阪府豊中市生れ。5歳で兵庫県宝塚市に移り,漫画と昆虫採集に熱中する。1946年4コマ漫画《マアチャンの日記帳》でデビュー。1947年単行本《新宝島》(酒井七馬原作)がベストセラーとなる。続く《ロスト・ワールド》などによって映画的手法を取り入れた斬新なストーリー漫画を作り上げ,《ジャングル大帝》などで人気作家となった。1951年大阪大付属医学専門部卒。1952年上京,《鉄腕アトム》《リボンの騎士》などを連載する。1962年虫プロを設立し,日本初のテレビ・アニメ《鉄腕アトム》をはじめとするアニメーション映画を発表。1967年には漫画雑誌《COM》を創刊してライフ・ワーク《火の鳥》(1954年―)連載のほか,若手漫画家に発表の場を与えた。その後も《ブッダ》《ブラック・ジャック》《三つ目が通る》《アドルフに告ぐ》などを手がけ,《ネオ・ファウスト》他を連載中に死去。善と悪,ヒューマニズムとニヒリズムの相克を描き,現代漫画の可能性を開き続けた。《手塚治虫漫画全集》のほか,宝塚市に手塚治虫記念館がある。
