Orontes River (Greek: Orontes)

The river originates in the Baalbek region of the Bekaa Plateau in Lebanon, flows north through Homs and Hama in Syria, and empties into the Mediterranean Sea near Antakya in Turkey. It is the largest river in western Syria, with a total length of about 497 km. In Arabic it is called Nahr al-'Aṣī, and in modern Turkish it is called the Asi. It is one of the important water resources for irrigation and land development in Syria. Between 1963 and 1969, the Rastan Dam, the Mehrda Dam, and a network of waterways were built using this river, and 72,000 hectares of the Ghab Marshland northeast of Hama were developed, with another 49,000 hectares currently under development.

レバノンのベカー高原のバールベク地方を源流とし，シリアのホムスやハマーを北方に貫流，トルコのアンタキヤ近くで地中海に注ぐ川。シリア西部最大の川で，全長約497km。アラビア語ではナフル･アルアシーNahr al‐‘Aṣī，現トルコ語ではアシAsi川。シリアの灌漑･土地開発にとって重要な水資源の一つとなっている。1963‐69年にこの川を利用してラスタン･ダム，メハルダ･ダムや水路網などが建設され，ハマーの北東にあるガーブ沼沢地が7万2000ha開発され，さらに4万9000haが開発中である。
