Conversos (English spelling)

Japanese: コンベルソ（英語表記）conversos

In Spanish, it means "proselytes." In Iberian history, it refers to Jews who converted to Christianity. Jews first settled in the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman period, especially after the Christian era. They were called Sephardim. During the Visigothic period, oppression of the Jews intensified after the Visigoths became Catholic in 587. During the Islamic period, Jews were given preferential treatment due to their cooperation with the Islamic invasion, and they were active in the economic (slave trade and other commerce, usury) and cultural (scriptural commentary, medicine, astronomy) fields, mainly in Cordoba, and some served the rulers as diplomats, financial officers, doctors, etc.

スペイン語で〈改宗者〉の意。とくにイベリア史では，キリスト教へ改宗したユダヤ人をいう。ユダヤ人のイベリア半島への定住はローマ時代，とくに紀元後のことである。彼らはセファルディムと呼ばれた。西ゴート時代には，587年の西ゴートのカトリック化以後，ユダヤ人への圧迫が強まっていった。イスラム時代にはイスラムの侵攻に協力したこともあってユダヤ人は優遇され，コルドバを中心に経済(奴隷貿易などの商業，高利貸付)，文化(聖典注釈学，医学，天文学)面で活躍し，外交･財務担当者，医師などとして支配者に仕える者もいた。
