A former town in Mizuma County in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It is located on the left bank of the Chikugo River, in the center of the Tsukushi Plain, and produces rice, wheat, enoki mushrooms, strawberries, and green onions. It is well-connected by water, and sake brewing and tile manufacturing have been thriving here since ancient times. Igusa grass is also cultivated and processed here. In February 2005, it was incorporated into Kurume City along with Tanushimaru Town in Ukiha County, Kitano Town in Mii County, and Mizuma Town in Mizuma County. 17.58 km2 . Population: 14,160 (2003). 福岡県南部,三潴(みづま)郡の旧町。筑後川の左岸,筑紫(つくし)平野の中央部にあり,米麦,エノキダケ,イチゴ,ネギなどを産する。水運の便もよく,古くから酒造,瓦製造が盛ん。イグサの栽培・加工も行われる。2005年2月浮羽郡田主丸町,三井郡北野町,三潴郡三潴町と久留米市へ編入。17.58km2。1万4160人(2003)。
