Illumination

...an epistemological principle asserted especially in the Neoplatonic tradition. In the philosophies of Pythagoras and Parmenides before Plato, truth existed in itself, was eternal and immortal, and possessed beauty, harmony, and logical transparency, and it was believed that the knowledge of truth could only come about when the soul became pure and free from the congestion of the senses and ascended to the world of light. This idea was used in Plato's theory of ideas and Plotinus' theory of nous (intellect), which taught the way of the purification and ascension of the soul, as well as the way in which the soul finds truth within itself through recollection.
