Sotoyama Plateau

Japanese: 外山高原 - そとやまこうげん

A plateau in central Iwate Prefecture stretching from Mt. Okura at the northern end of Morioka City to Mt. Daishaku in the eastern part of Tamayama Village, Iwate County. It is a typical elevated peneplain in the Kitakami Highlands. The prefectural Toyama Ranch was opened here in 1876 and it was once used by the Imperial Household Ministry, but is now a resort area on the outskirts of Morioka City. Among the gentle hills is Toyama Dam, which was built during World War II, and to the north is the earth-type Gandou Dam, which was completed in 1960. The surrounding area is covered with lilies of the valley and white birch, and has been designated as Toyama Hayasaka Prefectural Natural Park.

岩手県中央部，盛岡市北端の大倉山から岩手郡玉山村東部の大尺（だいしやく）山にかけての高原。北上高地中の代表的な隆起準平原。1876年県営外山牧場が開設され，一時，宮内省御用地となったが，現在は盛岡市郊外の行楽地となっている。なだらかな丘陵の中に第2次大戦中に建設された外山ダムがあり，北には1960年完成のアース式の岩洞（がんどう）ダムがある。周辺はスズラン，シラカバにおおわれ，外山早坂県立自然公園に指定されている。
